After breakfast check-out we continue to the nearby Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary for our encounter with the Monarch Butterflies. In Angangueo we exchange vehicles for the back of an open truck as we drive through the pastoral countryside to the starting point of the sanctuary trail. The path is groomed but sometimes fairly steep but with convenient benches for occasional rests along the way. Near the top of the trail loop the density thickens until we reach the center of the resting monarchs. Millions of monarchs cover the tall oyamel and fir trees, and, as the sun warms their black-and-orange wings, the butterflies fill the air, illuminating the area. The sight can be spectacular and some Mexicans still hold the Aztec belief that the souls of the dead are reborn as monarchs. After lunch continue to Ixtapan de la Sal resort or return with the driver to Mexico City Airport or hotel for optional night. (breakfast, lunch).
